  • Mandatory 10-day quarantine at home or destination address after arrival in India
  • British nationals also need a Covid-19 RT-PRC test before arrival within 72 hours before travel
  • Covid-19 RT-PCR test on arrival at Indian airport and another test on day 8 after arrival

The new Covid-19 restrictions, which entail, among other things, a mandatory 10-day quarantine, for British nationals arriving in India, will apply from Monday, October 4.

The Union Department of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has mandated all states to ensure that quarantine rules for UK travelers are strictly enforced.

In a reciprocal action reflecting the UK government’s strict travel standards to treat fully vaccinated Indians as unvaccinated, India ordered all UK passengers to carry a negative RT-PCR report before their trip followed by the quarantine period obligatory.

Under previous Department of Health guidelines, passengers arriving from the UK were to undergo a 7-day home quarantine. Those released from home isolation after testing negative would then be required to monitor their health for an additional 7 days.

This has been replaced with a mandatory 10-day self-isolation for all UK passengers to India, regardless of their medical condition.

“All these passengers placed in isolation / quarantine should be monitored regularly by state / district authorities. The State Passenger Manifest for flights originating in the UK must be forwarded by the Immigration Office to the State Government / Integrated Disease Surveillance Program for such follow-up ”, Co-Secretary (Department of health and family protection) Lav Agarwal writes to Civil Aviation Secretary Rajiv Bansal.

British citizens arriving in India will also need to take the Covid-19 RT-PCR test 72 hours before boarding for an Indian destination, and then retake the test after arriving at the airport, at their own expense.

“Indian authorities are responsible for establishing and enforcing the rules for entering India. We are in close contact with them and will update the FCDO travel advice on GOV UK with the latest information on any rule changes, ”a UK government spokesperson said, according to the PTI news agency.

From Monday October 4, all UK nationals traveling to India will be required to comply with the following Covid-19 guidelines:

  • Covid-19 RT-PRC test before arrival within 72 hours before travel
  • Covid-19 RT-PCR test on arrival at Indian airport
  • Covid-19 RT-PCR test on day 8 after arrival
  • Mandatory 10-day quarantine at home or destination address after arrival in India

The UK has relaxed quarantine restrictions for vaccinated passengers from 17 countries in Asia and the Caribbean. However, even fully vaccinated Indian travelers have been excluded from the list and are subject to mandatory 10-day isolation, which has sparked an uproar and led India to tighten its travel standards for British passengers.
