Former Tanzanian finance minister Basil Mramba has died at the age of 81 after being hospitalized with complications from Covid-19, according to his family.
He died Tuesday at Regency Hospital in Dar es Salaam while undergoing treatment.
“With great sadness, Mramba’s family hereby announce the passing of our beloved father, Basil Pesambili Mramba. A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered.
“Mzee died of illness at Regency Medical Center earlier this morning. Given the pandemic situation, the family accepts your sympathies and prayers and asks for privacy, ”his son Godfrey Mramba said in a statement.
Only relatives will be admitted to Mramba’s residence in Dar es Salaam, Godfrey added.
Basil Mramba, former member of the Rombo constituency in the Kilimanjaro region, was born on May 15, 1940.
He has held various positions within the government, including regional commissioner of Mbeya (1995-2000), Minister of Finance (2001-2005) and Minister of Trade and Industry (2006-2008).
Mramba, alongside former Energy Minister Daniel Yona, was sentenced in July 2015 by the Kisutu Magistrates’ Court to three years in prison after being found guilty of abuse of power and causing loss of 11.7 billion tsh ($ 5 million) to the government.
They were released after serving six months and sentenced to perform community service while serving a suspended sentence for the remaining two years of their prison sentence.
